Online Searching - LIRN

[LIRN is a collection of online databases that allows you to search many different sources from one location – books, journals, reviews, etc.]

To access the resources through LIRN, enter through the link above.
Enter your patron identification number in the box provided.
[Note: if you do not remember your patron identification number, speak to the librarian.]

The simplest way to search all of the resources available is through Quick Search, the first option available after you log in.  Enter your search term(s) in the available box and click the Quick Search button.

If you have a more complex topic, you may want to choose the Connect to LirnSearch option beneath the Quick Search button. This option allows you choose where in the document to search for your search words (use the drop-down menu next to the search box): keyword, author, title, subject, or description. It also allows you to select specific databases for your search (see below).
(Selecting Advanced Search will allow you to put multiple words/phrases in separate boxes.)

-You must select at least one box in the Search Sources area located beneath the search box in order to get any results. You can select specific databases, or all the databases associated with a topic. Some of the best options to select are Health & Medical, Psychology, Social Sciences and Science & Technology.

In addition, you may want to select Search Options to help you organize and filter your results.
You can:
-Remove Duplicates: to not have duplicate records displayed in your results (select “no” on Display Duplicates) or to have them grouped together
-Results Per Source or Results Per Page: choose the number of hits returned per source and the number of results displayed per page
-Results Display Level: choose how your results are displayed
-Sorting By: sort results by Relevance, Title, Author, Date, etc.
-Limit Results To: choose the Language, Material, Full Text, Peer Reviewed, and/or Dates.

After clicking Go, your search results should appear beneath the search terms. The searching process often takes a few minutes – be patient! You can click on the title to go to the record or click on Full Record or Full-Text PDF. Not everything found through LIRN has full text available – see Limit Results To above to ensure you only get full text results.

You can make further adjustments to your search from the search results page at the left, including Display, Duplicates, Sorting, etc.
